Thelma Ortiz Muraida

Thelma Ortiz Muraida is an artist, children’s book illustrator, and author from San Antonio, TX who graduated from Trinity with a B.A. in Art in May 1972. In 1971, Ortiz Muraida was listed as a member of Los Pintores de Aztlan. 

During her time at Trinity, Ortiz Muraida showed her work in a 1971 exhibition alongside members of Los Pintores de Aztlan. This exhibition was shown at the library building at San Antonio College (SAC) and in the Ruth Taylor Music Center Gallery Foyer in conjunction with the Trinity Association for Chicano Students (TACS). Furthermore, Ortiz Muraida won the first place award in the San Antonio River Art Show for a color lithograph in 1971. In 1972, Ortiz Muraida was among 100 artists exhibited in the 23rd annual Texas Watercolor Exhibition being held in the McNay Institute in San Antonio. After graduating from Trinity, Ortiz Muraida pursued graduate work in printmaking at the Art Students League in New York and postgraduate work in printmaking from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She also pursued graduate work at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio. 

Thelma Ortiz Muraida has consistently shown her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Texas and has provided illustrations for children’s books written by notable authors such as Carmen Tafolla.
