Terry Ybañez

Terry Ybañez is a Chicana artist, educator, and community activist who graduated from Trinity with a B.A. in Art in 1982. During her time at Trinity she was involved in the student arts and literature publication, the Trinity Review.

Ybañez was born and raised in San Antonio, TX and attended Brackenridge High School in San Antonio. During this time, it was named Phillis Wheatley High School. After graduation Ybañez attended Stephens College in Columbus, MO from 1977-1978, eventually returning to San Antonio. She attended UTSA for the 1979 fall semester before transferring to Trinity for her last two years. Ybañez served as the arts editor for the Trinity Review, contributing artwork to the Fall 1981 and Spring 1982 issues of the publication. 

After graduation, Ybañez taught and showed her work in Texas, California, and Kuwait. In 1987, Ybañez received her M.A. in Bicultural and Bilingual Studies from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has illustrated numerous books such as Hairs/Pelitos by Sandra Cisneros (1994), painted murals across San Antonio, and has made an indelible impact on the San Antonio art community. Ybañez taught art at Brackenridge High School from 2004-2021.

Ybañez continues to create and exhibit her work and is an active member of the San Jose mission neighborhood located in the Southside of San Antonio.
