Roberto Gonzalez

Roberto Gonzalez is a multidisciplinary artist, musician, performer, and curator who currently resides just outside of San Antonio, TX. Gonzalez graduated from Trinity with a B.A. in Art in May of 1978. He was a member of Con Safo from 1974 until the group dissolved in 1976. 

After graduating from high school in 1973, Gonzalez moved from Laredo to San Antonio and began to take classes at San Antonio College (SAC). Gonzalez studied under Chicano artist and professor Mel Casas who introduced Gonzalez to Con Safo. Gonzalez was one of the only non-representational and performance artists in the group. Gonzalez participated in numerous exhibitions with Con Safo, including the Mexican American and Literary Symposium, sponsored by Trinity University and others in 1974. After two years at SAC, Gonzalez transferred to Trinity University. As a student at Trinity, Gonzalez showed his work in a one-man exhibition in Laurie Auditorium in February of 1977. After graduating with his B.A. Gonzalez continued to exhibit his work and perform in galleries in San Antonio, including at the San Antonio Museum of Modern Art in July of 1979. Gonzalez graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word with a B.A. in Business Administration in 1980. 

Gonzalez has served as an artist in residence, continuing education teacher, and curator and fine arts administrator at the Carver Community Cultural Center in San Antonio. Gonzalez has performed with many dance and music ensembles and served as Artistic Director for Ile Bahia de San Antonio during the 1990s. Gonzalez continues to create and exhibit his work, most recently participating in the exhibition Xicanx: Dreamers + Changemakers | Soñadores + creadores del cambio on view at the Contemporary at Bluestar from June to October 2024.
