Dr. Ricardo Romo explains the thought-process behind the studies produced by the Tomas Rivera Center.

The first area of research conducted by the TRC is the study of education related to the Hispanic community. The range of educational research spanned from primary schools to higher education institutions like universities and community colleges. The belief of Dr. Romo was to address other problem areas for Hispanics, economic and social, to begin with educating the population.

The TRC was involved in research studies regarding education, but they also participated in funding opportunities to educate the Latino population. The following are newspaper clippings that discuss grant funds being provided by the TRC to assist with programs in Southwest Texas to increase the amount of Hispanic and Latino students studying education.

Another component of the TRC educational research was that they were utilized when other Hispanic groups needed assistance for lawsuits, or solutions to arising problems.

Dr. Ricardo Romo elaborates on the Tomas Rivera Center's involvement with the LULAC vs. Clements lawsuit.

For example; in 1987, MALDEF filed a lawsuit on behalf of LULAC against Texas Governor William P. Clements, the Texas Commissioner of Higher Education, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the board of regents at 15 universities in the state of Texas. The plaintiff argued that the state of Texas had prevented Mexican American students in the border region access to high quality education programs. The TRC conducted research for LULAC and MALDEF for this specific lawsuit.
